This webpage is a part of our old website - it has been left in place for people who still need this information, Please be advised there have been technical advances since the publish of this article, all of our webservers now perform this task for you with a few clicks in your control panel. To test one of our new model servers please visit our website at www.global2000hosting.com Welcome to the web site assistance area. Here we will cover several issues which may be of help to you in building your website at Global 2000 Hosting. 1. Members area setup and .htaccess protection for your important files. 2. Telnet vs SSH - Why Global no longer allows insecure telnet connections to our servers. 3. Deciding which platform is for you Unix, Linux, Windows IIS
Members area: First of all you will likely be protecting a folder called a members folder {this folder can be named anything you like we will for this ex refer to it as "members" } Logon via ftp to your webspace and create a new folder called "members" once the new folder is created you will need a .htaccess file to protect the folder from being accessed without a user id and password. You may create a .htaccess file with wordpad on your pc as follows: AuthUserFile /home/yourusername/password/.htpasswd Place the above text into an empty file and save as a .htaccess file and upload to the members directory as ASCIII format not Binary/ Now you will see that you cannot access the "members directory without a user id and password. Next you will need a method for managing user id and password information to the .htpasswd file, we recommend using a simple to install program called ACCESS DENIED <<Click here to download! For this you will need a working Cgi-bin on your website please contact the technical dept. for installation if you do not have one. We can perform this complete installation for you for a fee of $75.00 {one hour technical time} if this is a job you do not wish to do, simply contact our technical dept and make the request. TELNET: Many users have asked why we no longer allow telnet, well simply put telnet is a large security risk for anyone, telnet incorporates the use of clear text~ What does this mean to you? Well when you open a telnet window and make a connection to a webserver it is possible that someone can use a sniffer and observe you typing in the server connection information and your user id and password are also displayed. You may then find your site totally destroyed and no method of corrections except to rebuild the entire site! So in conclusion please use Secure crt so you can maintain a secure SSH connection to the server each and everytime! You may download this program from www.download.com or contact our technical dept, if you are unable to locate the program. If you have questions please email our technical dept using a support form. Web Server Platforms: This is a choice which can be difficult, they easiest way to make this choice is ask yourself several questions. Do you use Cgi scripts? If yes are they 100% Windows compliant? Cgi scripts which are not labeled as Windows compliant most likely are not and will cause difficulty on a Windows platform, this would be a good reason to select Linux/Unix. Do you use ASP ? If you answered yes to this your website would be better hosted in our opinion on a windows unit, While Linux/Unix is capable of supporting ASP our opinion is ASP is best supported in Windows. SQL - MySql is available from our Linux based systems and any platform you choose for your site may operate an Sql database. If you require MSSQL services, this is only available on our windows servers. Is your site safe operating on a Windows platform? Well simply put, Windows platform is targeted for more viruses than any other platform operating. While Global 2000 Hosting has never suffered a data loss as a result of a virus infection on a windows server, We recommend all Windows IIS clients maintain a backup copy of site data on your local system at all times! Global has researched potential attacks concerning the Windows server platform and assessed Windows as a higher risk category for hosting. |
